03. DragonMotoTours Champagne & Ardennes Tour : 1st - 5th May 2015

About the tour

If you are looking for a short break on two wheels over the early May Bank Holiday where you can ride open roads, then our five day tour taking in the Champagne region of France and riding in the French and Belgian Ardennes will be ideal.

We shall be staying in a family run hotel for the four nights of the tour which is located less than 250 miles from Calais.  The hotel has a pool, provides excellent cuisine and is in a very tranquil setting located in a small community in the heart of the Champagne-Ardenne region of France.

Our base has been chosen to give you an opportunity to ride through a part of France often missed by many riders as they head further south on the autoroutes to some of the more mountainous areas of the country.  We are close to the border with Belgium opening up the opportunity for putting you on as many excellent motorcycling roads as we can over five days!  This region may not have the scale of the Alps to ride over but there are many elevation changes on the rolling hillsides which provide you with great visibility, sweeping bends and open quiet roads to ride.

We have routes which will take you along The Chemin des Dames, an elevated road which flows for over 18 miles along a ridge overlooking rivers and valleys.  We follow sections of the Champagne Tourist route which takes you through vineyards and picturesque villages and towns and we will visit Lac du Der, the largest artificial lake in Western Europe and a lovely location to have lunch.

In Belgium we will ride roads that flow through forests with excellent view points opening up along the way of villages nestling in the curves of meandering rivers and valleys.  There is also the beer in Belgium to consider and we will ride to The Orval Abbey which is a monastery close to the French/Belgian border and home to a brewery and cheese factory..... something to taste while there and the other to put in your pannier for later maybe?!

The region is also steeped in history from both World War I and II and we will be riding to visit some of the memorials in the area such as one to The Battle of the Marne which stands 35 metres high and The Butte de Montsec which is an American War memorial site standing proud overlooking Lac de Madine.  Verdun is less than an hour from our hotel and there are many memorials which you may wish to visit there such as the Douaumont Ossuary.  Only a short ride from our hotel are The Kaiser Tunnels, a network of trenches from the First World War hidden within a forest which is easly accessible via a good paved road.

We return to the UK on the Tuesday with a scheduled Eurotunnel crossing arriving in Folkestone mid-afternoon.

This tour will suit anyone looking for a relaxing few days riding in northern Europe and is ideally suited to anyone who may be touring on a motorbike outside of the UK for the first time.

Total mileage for this tour will be approximately 900 miles if you join us on all our planned ride-outs.
